Yes, fruit does contain naturally occurring sugars called fructose, but that does not mean we should stop eating it!
Two (2) serves of fruit per day is recommended as it is a great source of vitamins and minerals and does not provide you with two much sugar. Not to mention it tastes great!
Fruit is also a great source of fibre, keeping our digestive system healthy and making us feel fuller for longer.
A serve of fruit is 1 medium sized apple/pear/orange, 1 small banana or 1 cup of diced fruit.
Fresh is best, however if you are choosing tinned fruit opt for juice not syrup. When it comes to dried fruit and fruit juice, it is recommended to have them only occasionally as they are concentrated sources of fruit, making it easy to over consume.
Fruit makes a great snack in between meals or as a natural sweetener to meals e.g fresh fruit in porridge instead of table sugar.
So don’t be afraid of fruit! Enjoy, embrace variety, and include as part of your healthy, balanced diet.
