As carers, our participants’ health and well-being is a big part of our focus (it clearly is or you wouldn’t be reading this post). Healthy Food options can easily become a piece of that puzzle.
Keeping my participants active and supporting them to exercise personal choice with healthier meal options is a top priority. I have one rule on days I provide support – no food from anywhere that has a drive through!
It’s not just about making the choice, that’s a learning experience for my participants – it’s the entire process; making a decision on what they want for lunch, building a grocery list, travel training to the supermarket (if that’s an option), shopping for ingredients, and preparing their own meals.
Who doesn’t love pizza?
I could eat it everyday and I know my participants would say the same. So why not? Let’s eat it everyday! The best part is we can keep it under 350cals per serving. Subbing out traditional crust for a cauliflower pizza base is a favourite for my crew, and there’s a bunch of topping alternatives to explore for that same pizza.
There are plenty of great recipes online for everything from Zucchini Lasagne to brownies (If you’re an Able Digital Wellness Member, head to your Members area and download some amazing menu options).
Give your crew a few options, take a vote (if there’s more than one of you), make it exciting.
If you have access to a kitchen during Support hours, there are endless opportunities. Having everyone contribute their own dish for a large group meal or even something to take home at the end of the day builds independence AND confidence.
Get creative, get inspired and you’ll inspire!
