People with Asperges and other intellectual impairments generally have the same nutritional requirements as everyone else, however, it can be common for people with intellectual disabilities to experience strong food aversions, not eat enough or have gastrointestinal symptoms like constipation.
If you experience gastrointestinal issues, it can be helpful to write a food and symptom diary to identify any trigger foods. A Dietitian may be able to assist you further if required. Meal planning can be a great way to ensure you are eating enough every day. This might be as simple as writing a plan for what you are going to eat for the day the night before
If there are strong food aversions, it is important to be open to trying new tastes and textures.
A great way to start is to write down your favourite foods from each of the 5 core food groups (Vegetables, Fruit, Grains, Diary, Protein). If you have a group with limited foods try to think of a recipe or meal that would incorporate this food group – be creative and even lean on the recipes that come with your weekly Able Digital Wellness access to try something new!
If you have any questions about your diet or would like one-on-one dietary advice from your Able Dietician, send us a message letting us know what you’re after and we’ll be in touch to help you achieve your goals!
