Between 50 and 80% of the human body is made up of water, and our body relies on drinking enough water to function properly. Water is required for digestion, to absorb nutrients, remove waste products, and regulate body temperature.
• 8 to 10 cups of water each day is vital to meet our requirements. The best choice is Australian tap water to stay hydrated. Try always keeping a water bottle with you as a visual reminder to have a drink.
• To make water more interesting, try flavouring by adding lemon slices, strawberries, or mint. Keeping water chilled in the fridge on hot days also helps to increase our intake.
• Watch your wee! Our urine is a good reflection of our hydration. Ideally is should be a light straw colour if well hydrated. If it starts to become a darker yellow, this is a good remind to increase our water intake for the day.
• Water is especially important when exercising – both during and after – as you lose water in your sweat as you move. Keep that water bottle handy!
TIP: Next time you’re at your local grocery store, purchase a 1L water bottle (not a bottle of water, but an empty one from the kitchenware section) that you like – something colourful perhaps and each time you finish it, fill it up to have at your side. You’ll become accustomed to not leaving it behind. We’d even suggest you buy more than one if you like your water chilled, so you can keep one in the fridge while you drink from the other, fill and swap over as you go.
