As you might’ve noticed, we’re big on celebrating the changes we’re making together, not only making healthy choices with your diet, but your exercise and any mental health reading you’ve done via our Wellness Resources. With that in mind, we’d like to take this opportunity to say – You’re doing great! Stay with us and continue to feel healthier and happier every single day.
This week our dieticians would like you to focus on (as the title suggests) making healthy choices when you eat out.
This can be challenging, as many options on the menu can be higher in saturated fat, sugar, and energy than compared to the same meal you would cook at home. Knowing how to select a healthy meal means we can still be social without negatively impacting our health goals.
- Choose dishes that contain mixed vegetables or salad (for example a beef and vegetable stir-fry is a healthier option compared to a beef curry with rice only). Also try to avoid options with cream, butter, coconut or cheese in sauces, and opt for a tomato or gravy base instead.
- Try sharing one main meal between two people and completing the dish with a side of vegetables or salad. Or consider ordering two entree sizes if enjoying a meal with multiple courses.
- Skip the extra bread or sweet drinks when eating out to avoid unnecessary extra energy intake with the meal.
You may not eat out often, but when you do, there’s no reason to sacrifice your goals and undo any of your hard work. Of course, every now and then we encourage you to spoil yourself (within reason!), but these times are the exception not the rule. Considering and making healthy choices is the key.
If you have any questions about your own diet or would like dietary advice from your Able Dietician, send us a message letting us know what you’re after and we’ll be in touch to help you achieve your goals!
