It may sound like a general rule, but we often need reminding of the importance of fruit and veg to ensure we’re eating enough. Whether you have a disability or not, vegetables and fruit are the keys to a healthy, well-rounded diet.
In the next few weeks we’ll be discussing portion sizes in detail, but for now let’s take a simple, brief look at what we should consider each day when it comes to fruit and veg.
In simplest terms, every day we should aim to eat 5 serves of vegetables and 2 serves of fruit ,but how do we know how much a serve is?
Here’s our suggested serving sizes:
-
- Vegetables = 0.5 cups
- Salad = 1 cup
- Fruit = 1 cup
Aim to include these in your lunch and dinner meals and to a lesser extent you can include fruit in your breakfast.
Measuring in cups makes it a little easier, especially when we consider the most common ways in which vegetables and to a lesser extent fruit are eaten … normally chopped and eaten with other foods in a meal. For instance, you might chop a whole head of broccoli for your stir fry – measure that out if you like and see what you get! You might also make a fruit salad, this also then allows for easy measurements.
