Eating a wide variety of fruits that are grown and available in Australia provide a good opportunity to increase healthy choices throughout the year. Choosing fruits that are in season (Seasonal Fruits) provides better value and quality and will also add more variety to your diet throughout the year. Choosing different coloured fruits also increases the variety of nutrients which can enhance your health and you only need to be eating 2 serves of fruit a day to see the benefits.
Most fruits are low in energy and high in fibre and water which will make you feel fuller and reduce the chances of overeating. During the summertime a lot of fruits come into season that are full of water which can also help with hydration such as watermelon, rock melon and mangoes! Fruit is abundant in vitamins and minerals and can reduce the risk of heart problems, some cancers and lowering blood pressure. Different coloured fruit provide different nutrients, for example to fruits that are orange, red, or yellow provide Vitamin A which can assist with eyesight function and immunity.
So how much is a serve of fruit?
- 1 medium apple or banana, orange or pear
- 2 small apricots, kiwi fruits or plums
- 1 cup diced or canned fruit (no added sugar
Tips to get the most out of fruit
- Always aim for seasonal fruit
- Eat most fruits with the skin on as that’s where most of the nutrients are
- Add fruits to other foods such as cereal, porridge & yoghurts
- Have fruits as a ‘go to’ snack
- Canned or frozen fruits are fine for convenience
